The Importance of CPR in Saving Lives

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

Introduction:

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique used to revive individuals who have suffered from cardiac arrest. In the UK, over 30,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals each year, and immediate CPR can double or even triple a person's chance of survival. Despite this, many people are unsure how to perform CPR or are hesitant to do so in an emergency situation. In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of CPR and provide guidance on how to perform it properly.

Statistics:

  • According to the British Heart Foundation, only 1 in 10 people in the UK survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

  • In the UK, approximately 80% of cardiac arrests occur at home.

  • Immediate CPR can increase a person's chance of survival by 2-3 times.

Importance of CPR:

CPR is vital in the event of cardiac arrest, as it helps to keep oxygen flowing to the brain and other vital organs until emergency services arrive. When performed correctly, CPR can significantly improve a person's chance of survival. In the UK, the average ambulance response time is around 8 minutes, but brain damage can occur within just a few minutes without oxygen. Therefore, it's essential to begin CPR as soon as possible.

How to Perform CPR: Performing CPR can seem daunting, but it's relatively straightforward.

Here's a simple guide:

1. Call for emergency services

2. Place the heel of your hand on the centre of the person's chest, then place the palm of your other hand on top and press down by 5 to 6cm (2 to 2.5 inches) at a steady rate of 100 to 120 compressions a minute.

3. After every 30 chest compressions, give 2 rescue breaths.

4. Tilt the person's head gently and lift the chin up with 2 fingers. Pinch the person's nose. Seal your mouth over their mouth and blow steadily and firmly into their mouth for about 1 second. Check that their chest rises. Give 2 rescue breaths.

5. Continue with cycles of 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths until they begin to recover or emergency help arrives.

Conclusion:

CPR is a life-saving technique that can significantly improve a person's chance of survival in the event of cardiac arrest. By understanding the importance of CPR and how to perform it, you could help to save someone's life. Remember to call for emergency services and start CPR as soon as possible, as every second counts.
